I’ve been into more of a knitting mood lately and sewing has taken a bit of a step back. It’s been rainy since the end of January so it’s hard to resist knitting when it’s all grey outside for long periods of time.
Je suis d’humeur tricoteuse en ce moment, et la couture passe en seconde place. Il pleut beaucoup depuis fin Janvier, et c’est vraiment difficile de résister un bon tricot quand il fait tout gris pendant longtemps comme ça.
The first thing I casted on after all my Christmas knitting is this baby blanket. I had a whole bunch of dark blue yarn that was sitting in a box unused. I’d bought it before the Little Man was born, thinking I’d make some pants and matching jumper for him but turns out there were two flaws in my plan: first, I didn’t have time for knitting for months after he was born; second, a full woollen outfit is just WAY too hot for Brisbane’s winter so he would never have worn it anyway.
Cette couverture de bébé est mon premier tricot depuis Noël. J’avais 7 pelotes de laine bleu foncée qui périssaient dans un coin, oubliées. Je les avaient achetées avant la naissance de P’tit Loup, avec pour intention de lui faire un pantalon et un manteau assorti. Mais il se trouve qu’il y avait deux problèmes dans mon plan ingénieux : premièrement, je n’ai pas eu le temps de tricoter pendant plusieurs mois après sa naissance ; deuxièmement, les hivers à Brisbane ne sont pas assez froids pour un ensemble tout en laine donc il n’aurait jamais eu l’occasion de le porter au final.
So I kept the yarn thinking I would use it for something else one day and when my friend gave birth to a baby boy, I knew that it would make a perfect baby blanket. I used the Twin Leaf Baby Blanket by Painting Lilies. The pattern is free but you do have to sign up for her newsletter or tweet about it in order to get it. That was fine by me.
J’ai donc gardé la laine, pensant que je trouverais bien quoi en faire. Quand une amie a donné naissance à un petit garçon fin janvier, j’ai immédiatement pensé que cette laine bleue ferait une super couverture de bébé. Pour le patron, c’est la Twin Leaf Baby Blanket de Painting Lilies. Le patron est gratuit (en anglait) mais il faut s’inscrire à sa newsletter ou tweeter sa page afin de l’obtenir, ce qui ne me posait aucun problème.
The pattern’s great. After a few repeats of the lace pattern, I had it memorized and was able to work without the chart. I did make a few mistakes along the way, which I only noticed later on so it was too late to go back and fix them. They’re not very obvious and get lost in the design, thankfully!
Le patron est super. Après plusieurs répétitions du motif de dentelle j’ai réussi à le mémoriser et n’avait plus besoin d’avoir la grille devant moi du coup. J’ai bien fait plusieurs erreurs ici et là mais je ne m’en suis rendue compte que plus tard et il était donc impossible de les corriger. Heureusement, elles ne sont pas évidentes et se fondent assez bien dans le design. Ouf !
The pattern is for Sport (5ply) weight yarn but mine was DK (8ply) so I just used 4mm needles and went from there. A blanket is not like a garment, it’s very easy to adapt to any type of yarn; just use the needle size that goes with your yarn and you’re good. You’ll just end up with a blanket that’s a different size from the original.
Mon fil était plus gros donc j’ai tout simplement utilisé une grosseur d’aiguilles adaptées a mon fil et ai suivi les explications telles quelles. Contrairement aux habits, il est très facile d’adapter une couverture à tout type et grosseur de laine. La seule différence est la taille finale de la couverture mais ce n’est pas un drame.
This was really great to make. It took some time but I still managed to finish it in less than a month. That’s got to be a record for me, especially for something as big as a blanket (rainy days, rainy days…).
Cette couverture était vraiment sympa à faire. Elle requiert pas mal d’heures avec ces motifs de dentelle, mais j’ai tout de même réussi à la faire en moins d’un mois, ce qui est un record pour moi… surtout pour une couverture (temps pluvieux, temps pluvieux…)

Elle est trop belle ta couverture!!!! Tu sais que Hugo ne se détache jamais de la couverture que tu lui avais offerte dans le coffret de naissance!!! Il se dispute sans arrêt avec Théo car il veut lui piquer tout le temps!!!!!

Your baby blanket is gorgeous. I laughed when you said that you were more inclined to knit than sew at the moment…me too. I have just been knitting a blanket too…for my first grandson to be born at the end of May, so I’ve chosen boyish colours that he won’t be embarrassed to own when he is a little older too.
